European Massage European,
often called Swedish massage, is the classic style of relaxation massage,
and may be used therapeutically to relieve or resolve many musculoskeletal
complaints. Pressure is applied to muscles, acting against deeper muscles
and bones, and moving in the same direction as the flow of blood returning
to the heart. European massage is designed to increase circulation and
blood flow.
Based on classic European massage techniques, this full body massage
helps soothe and relax tired muscles, increases circulation while inducing
a feeling of overall well-being transporting you to a blissful world
of healing and relaxation.
The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase oxygen flow in the
blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens
recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic
acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. As well, it increases circulation
without increasing heart load, stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping
them supple and pliable, and stimulates the skin and nervous system.
Swedish massage is recommended for stress reduction, both emotional
and physical, and is suggested as a regular program for stress management.
Oil, cream, or lotion is applied on the skin to reduce friction and
allow smooth strokes.
There are six basic stroke techniques used in European Swedish
massage:
Effleurage - Gentle stroking along the length
of a muscle
Friction - Deep massage applied by circular
motions of the thumbs or fingertips
Kneading & Petrissage - Pressure and squeezing
across the width of a muscle
Tapotement - Lightly slapping or tapping
larger muscles
Vibration - Dragging palms or fingers lightly
along the skin surface. Can include gentle shaking
